Large Samples

population parameter is 2000 hours and the sample means will be distributed be around the parameter value 2000. In some samples it is less than 2000 hours and in some it may be more than 2000 hours. If we a draw a finite number of samples, the sampling distribution formed by these sample means is referred to as an empirical distribution. On the other hand if we conceive of drawing all possible samples of given size, the resulting sampling distribution is a theoretical sampling distribution. Statistical inference is based on these theoretical sampling distributions which are nothing but the probability distributions of the relevant statistics.
In most practical situations, we may draw only one sample from the statistical population in order to test a hypothesis or to estimate the value of a parameter. However we have to realise that the sampling distribution provides the underlying theoretical structure for decision based on a single sample.
Characteristics of a Sampling Distribution
Consider samples of size 5 drawn from the population of light bulbs. Suppose for one sample, the mean x = 1960 hours and for another sample, mean x2 = 2020 hours. The theoretical frequency distribution of x values of all such simple random samples of five bulbs would constitute the sampling distribution of the mean for samples of size five. A sample mean would be just as likely to lie above the population mean of 2000 hours as below it. Small deviations from 2000 would occur more frequently than large deviations. Furthermore because of averaging, we would expect less dispersion or spread among sample means than among the values of the individual items in the original population. That is, the standard deviation of the sampling distribution of the mean should be less than the standard deviation of the individual items of the population.
Other characterisations of the sampling distribution are described below. Suppose the sample size of 5 is increased to 50. Then another sampling distribution of the mean is generated. Here we expect to find less dispersion among these sample means than with the case of size 5. This is because, larger the samples closer the sample means will be to the population mean. Thus the standard deviation of the sampling distribution which measures chance error inherent in the process of using samples to approximate population values, would decrease with increasing sample size.
A characteristic of this sampling distribution is that if the original population distribution is normal, sampling distribution of the mean will also be normal.
It is very important to note the following theorem concerning the sampling distribution of mean.

Types of Diagrams

Multiple Bar Diagram

Multiple bar diagram is used for comparing two or more sets of statistical data. Bars are constructed side by side to represent the sets of values for comparison (see example 3).

Component Bar Siagram

Here, each bar representing the total value is sub-divided into its different component parts. This enables comparison between different components and also between a component and the whole (see example 4).

For example, where populations of different countries are represented by a bar diagram, each bar can be sub-divided into sub-populations representing males and females.

Percentage Bar Diagram

This is another form of component bar diagram. Here, the components are not the actual values but percentages of the whole. The main difference between the component bar diagram and percentage bar diagram is that in the former the bars are of different heights since their totals may be different. Whereas in the latter the bars are of equal height since each bar represents 100 per cent. In the case of data having sub-divisions, percentage bar diagram will be more appealing than component bar diagram (see example 5).

Pie Diagram

A pie diagram is a pictorial representation of a statistical data with several sub-divisions in a circular form. Component bar diagrams can also be drawn for such a data. But pie diagram is more appealing to eyes for comparison. For example, the distribution of the revenue (cost, sales, profit, reserve, etc.) of a company can be represented in a pie diagram.

A pie diagram consists of a circle sub-divided into several sectors by radius. The area of the sectors is proportional to the values of the components. In order to draw a pie diagram the different values of the components are expressed in degrees taking the whole value as 360°. A circle is drawn with a convenient radius and different sectors are drawn with these angles at the centre, (see examples 6 and 7). A look at the diagram will be more appealing if different colours are given to different sectors.

Pictogram

It is a diagram in which pictures are drawn to represent the data. Each full picture represents a given quantity. For example, the number of colleges in Madras, Barathiar and Bharathidasan universities may be

represented as follows:
